Strengthening Communities: Building Strategic Partnerships: A TOOLKIT FOR COMMUNITY- BASED ORGANIZATIONS

Networking

Capacities Needed – Clear communication channels and identified recipients at multiple levels of the organization. Strategies for disseminating information within respective organizations.

Inter-Institutional Support Needed – Organizational approval and support to engage in reciprocity; the act of intentionally sharing relevant information and using information that is shared. Professional development opportunities to communicate effectively.

Coordinating

Capacities Needed – agreed upon objectives; awareness of each organization’s leadership structure and decision-making process as it relates to modifying activities. Develop an evaluation and assessment plan inclusive of timeline for the modified activity.

Inter-Institutional Support Needed – Professional Development opportunities for creating objectives that are SMART (delineate acronym), developing shared leadership competencies; create competencies to assess and interpret data to improve modified activities. Resources for implementation.

COOPERATING

Capacities Needed – written agreement on allocation of resources, decision makers for each organization and managing partners from each organization. Commitment to the common purpose and a mechanism to evaluate the partnership, receive and give feedback on its benefits.

Inter-Institutional Support Needed – professional development opportunities in documenting processes and policies to create a systemic approach for modifying activities and sharing resources with another organization.

COLLABORATING

Capacities Needed – develop a shared mission and vision; Define roles, responsibilities and accountability measures; Host meaningful and intentional opportunities to transfer knowledge or lessons learned to enhance one another’s capacity.

Inter-Institutional Support Needed – Provide time and resources to implement and assess the common purpose and flexibility to meet regularly to exchange information.  Senior leadership ongoing commitment to the change.

Competing

Capacities Needed – Basic capacities to sustain functioning within your organization, ability to assess what is needed all while competing with another organization for participants and/or resources. Examples include service delivery, fundraising, financial management and planning.

Inter-Institutional Support Needed – Support to conduct market research to evaluate competitors, assess the extent of impact on your organization and ability to implement change

Coexisting

Capacities Needed – Basic capacities for functioning within a single organization.

Inter-Institutional Support Needed – Ability to preserve institutional knowledge in the face of staff turnover – knowledge transfer.
